Newland Completes Installation of Ozone Generation System for the EAST BAY Water Treatment Plant in Philippines

Newland Entech Europe was awarded the supply and commissioning of the ozone generation system to be integrated into the East Bay drinking water station in the Philippines.

The drinking water treatment plant is located in the Pakil Lake area, east of Manila, with a production capacity of 50,000 cubic meters per day. The plant consists of ozonation, dissolved air flotation, and two stages of filtration.

The installation includes two ozone generators from the NLO series, model 7.5 K, with a unitary ozone production of 180 kg/day, operating from liquid oxygen.

This oxygen is treated before entering the generator body through a filtering system and nitrogen addition to ensure stable ozone production. The ozone generators feature discharge tubes equipped with the latest safety systems to protect the dielectrics and an advanced energy consumption control system.

Each ozone generator is equipped with a complete set of instrumentation to monitor the operational parameters of the equipment and a UV spectrophotometer that allows for a regulation loop to optimize energy consumption and minimize operating costs.

To reduce the temperature in the ozone generators, closed-circuit cooling systems were used, fed with deionized water with additives, to preserve the construction materials of the equipment in the long term. Each cooling system includes a dual pump to ensure continuous operation.

A chiller was installed as a backup to cool the equipment during periods when the lake water temperature exceeded 28ºC.

The generated ozone is sent to the contact chambers located at the plant's head, where the water peroxidation is carried out. The transfer of ozone to the water is done using high-efficiency dome-type porous diffusers, through which the ozone gas flows and mixes with the water.

To destroy undissolved ozone, catalytic thermal ozone destructors governed by a PLC were incorporated, providing the most efficient process control.

The air preheating process and temperature control are performed with elements that are 100% compatible with humid ozone gas, thus ensuring durability over time. The construction of these destructors is designed so they can be installed and operated outdoors without needing to be housed in construction shelters.

Additionally, the ozone destruction systems include a demister or drop separator and a sub- and overpressure valve.

To ensure safety within the plant, the ozonation building is equipped with the most modern safety systems in terms of gas leak detection. In the event of ozone gas leaks, the plant automatically shuts down, and a set of air extractors starts, evacuating the entire room volume within seconds.

The entire ozone installation is controlled by a control panel that allows for the monitoring of all plant elements and the exact dosing required by the operator.

With more than 50,000 kg/h of ozone installed around the world, Newland contributes to the environment protection by reducing the consumption of chemical products using clean technologies.
